Starting its humble beginnings in Townsville Queensland in 2005, and fueled by a weird concoction of influences, The Marf Loth Loloply was originally formed for a high school talent quest. The original line-up consisted of Nathan Roche (guitar) who picked up a guitar a month earlier – Gareth Lloyd (saxophone) and Struan McCallum (glockenspiel). After a sorrowful and bizarre performance which included a dance sequence to “You Burn Me Up I’m A Cigarette” off the Robert Fripp solo album “Exposure”, the trio continued onward and downward. Eventually they added fellow schoolmate and local recluse Mitchel Kerley on drums and Pakistani high achiever Harshan Panchilinham on keyboards. The result was what they called “spazz Jazz” and between 2005 – 2007 they jammed out improvisations onto a cassette tape on the weekends. Taking their nods to Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, King Crimson and Naked City, plus whatever else the only record store in Townsville provided, the group ventured on. Sooner or later members were replaced and Anthony Hanratty was added on the viola and Gareth’s brother Rohin on Drums. Things started to get a little bit more sensible and structured – but not entirely.
