Since I met Jen, her fearless creativity has always inspired me. Her improvising style is unbound by ego, without any unnnecessary material or sonic weight. It carries with it a full life, heavy with experience, all in the pursuit of love. She was the first person I could converse over Teal Swan or Carlos Casteneda, without feeling like these topics were particularly strange. Jen and I would jam at her place in Moonee Ponds, where she she had a warm and welcoming home rehearsal studio. The acoustics were boisterous, being made of corrugated iron and being more then fourteen foot high at a peak in the middle. We recorded many spontaneous sounds here, in the grey skies of Melbourne, and she still has boundless amounts of documented improvisation. I haven't seen Jen in over a year now, and haven't belly-laughed so hard, since we both moved to different cities. The recording of Out is a reflection of a sea change.
This recording has a buoyancy which adds to her more experimental oeuvre, which is often jangly and spiky, always striking and dominated by movement. Rather than being an impediment, it is reflective of her quick-footed, spontaneous movement; dissonant and charging one moment, then waves of flourishing consonance the next. Always moving. Her voice comes out when she is truly blooming, a momentary excitation that happens in natural vocal improvisers when they are body, mind and soul in the moment - Aemon Webb
